Access to school sanitation is limited and innovation is needed in order to create hygienic sanitation facilities for the millions of school children in Africa that today are lacking this essential service. School sanitation is important for a healthy school environment for children. By securing well functioning sanitation facilities increased respect for the school is created in the community and sanitation is very important for securing retention rates for girls in particular. The main task of SuSan Design is to bridge the gap between user and technology, and to think creatively on how to give incentives to the school for its sustainability. By more thoroughly planning of the system before producing it, viewing the challenges from a user perspective, the designers will also contribute to lower cost and improve service delivery. The designers will also view the school sanitation unit on its fertilizer production capacity. SuSan Design has access to an easy to use methodology of treatment of urine and solids assuring that it is safe to use in agriculture. This could bring income to the school from the toilets by selling fertilizer of producing food for use or sale.
